I'm a few days late, but I'm reminded of the massacre that took place at Virginia Tech about a year ago, after which members of the Korean community called upon us to fast in repentance for Cho's crimes. What they should have said was, get over it, you killed millions in the Korean War, and we're supposed to be ashamed over this? This goes back to what I said before about cowardice. Contrast us to blacks, who would never imagine taking any group responsibility for the various interracial rapes, robberies, and homicides that their brothers and sisters commit on a day-to-day basis. If South Korea and the Korean American community were run by real men, they wouldn't have shed a tear over this incident.

Ron Paul won't be able to implement all he believes in, but he's worth a try. He is the only viable candidate, in any case. If the American public really wants an adulterer, a crackhead, a creationist, or a lesbian to be their leader, then the present generation is simply beyond hope.

The cowardice of the average Asian male

Every Asian female flaw has a counterpart in Asian males. The Asian female's need to seek out white males and the Asian male's failure to end the problem come from the same underlying weakness. I like this old feature from Asian Week, especially these two quotes:

“Asian males are not portrayed as masculine, whereas Asian females are stereotyped as submissive, exotic."

“In the first round, there were a lot of Asian males. White males would prefer hiring and working with Asian females over Asian males.”

100% right, but it misses the crux of the problem! Expecting white media and business to change is expecting a dog not to eat its feces. It's simply fundamental for a powerful group of males to seek out the most attractive females from weaker groups, and to facilitate it by excluding their males from positions of power.

We have to take the initiative by ignoring popular media and by starting businesses bigger than the local Chinese fast food joint.

Now, about Asians in Asia. If there isn't a single man among the billions who will step up and deal with these people the way they need to be dealt with, then it may be best to just write the place off entirely. As anyone who's been there will tell you, the major cities are already teeming with interracial relationships. Asia will always be our stronghold, just because there are so many of us there, but the sheer nastiness of what's happening there will keep me away for the rest of my life.

Why are Eurasian women less attractive?

(1) Eurasian women have less attractive faces than Asian women
(2) Eurasian women have less attractive bodies, and less sex appeal, than either Asian or European women (though the Asian and European women's figures are attractive for very different reasons)
(3) Eurasian women are less youthful and feminine than Asian women
(4) There is no characteristic in which they exceed all others, even exoticism (Asian-black mixes are much more unusual and exotic, in my view).

Let's illustrate with Kristin Kreuk and Maggie Q, both of whom are often touted as prime examples of Eurasian beauty. Of course, neither of them are unattractive in an absolute sense (Maggie Q is close), but they can serve to illustrate at least the first of the above points.

Asian males would do well to understand the broader context of this discussion, rather than to simply run about glorifying their women. Below-replacement fertility rates and sky-high interracial marriage rates mean fewer and fewer beautiful Asian women, and fewer Asian people in general, in future generations.

What does the Virginia Tech shooting mean for the Asian community?

We already know the negative effects on our community -- shame, damaged reputation, and probable backlash. But could any good come of it? Will it reduce immigration to the United States? Will it reduce race-mixing? Will it somehow "enhance" the image of Asian males, by making them appear more masculine?

I think the answer to all three questions is no. First, immigration to the US from Asia is a long-term trend produced by powerful incentives, and any decline in immigration from South Korea or other Asian nations is likely to be transient. Second, this incident will increase race-mixing, not reduce it. Asian males and Asian females have already been separated to an enormous degree, and this incident will only widen that gap, so that many Asian females will now be hesitant to form any relationship with an Asian male, and many Asian females already in relationships with Asian males will have a considerable amount of shame -- in some cases enough to create tensions that lead to breakdown of the relationship. Third, this incident will damage the image of Asian males, not enhance it. What really draws women to "dangerous" men is not the violent crimes they may or may not commit, but their underlying masculinity and aggressiveness. Many women do view the carnage of say, the LA riots, as "heroic," but nobody finds anything attractive about events such as this, and neither will they find anything attractive about the shootings at Virginia Tech.

As to the actual events at VT, it looks like there's all sorts of nastiness at play here. This is mere speculation, but I'm guessing that the black male who was killed in the first shooting was either the boyfriend or the new boyfriend of the girl who was killed here, and that the girl (who was white) was either the former girlfriend or the obsession of the shooter.

This entire incident reminds me of what I've said repeatedly, which is that violence is NOT a rational option for a minority group with no power locally or globally. Of course, the shooter didn't have a good reason for doing what he did anyway, but the incident still illustrates what happens when you mess with the big guns and the big media.

Shmuley Boteach advises Jewish man with Catholic woman to marry Jewish woman instead.

Four comments:

There are no Asian female Shmuleys. The gender disparities for Jewish males/females, black males/females, and Asian females/males are all similar, but while many Jewish and black males steadfastly oppose intermarriage, there are few if any Asian females who oppose it in principle, even if they do not partake of it themselves. The difference is that for Jews and blacks, the males have the advantage. There will always be independent-thinking, egotistical males who recognize the importance of their communities and who are willing to fight for them.

Shmuley Boteach is a radio and TV host, and author. Can anyone think of an Asian-American politician, novelist, journalist, professor, entertainer, sports star, etc, who has ever espoused views similar to these? Forget about the women; can we even find an Asian man who will stand up for his people?

What would happen if an Asian man or woman actually did defend the Asian community? Shmuley is linked from the Yahoo! home page, and has his own television and radio shows. The Wikipedia article on Shmuley makes no mention of his views on intermarriage. With his intolerant, hateful views, shouldn't Shmuley have been ostracized long ago?

Race is much deeper and more important than religion. Of course, being Jewish is not just about adopting the Jewish religion, as Shmuley suggests in his article. Jews are an ethnicity, at least. But my point is that if it is acceptable to defend the preservation of a religion, it should certainly be acceptable to defend the preservation of a race. With race comes shared culture, shared language, shared history, shared ancestral origin, shared physical features and personality traits -- everything, basically. Wide variation does exist within races -- and that's a good thing -- but variation between races is significant as well (in some categories more than others), and every race is absolutely unique and distinct, and worthy of survival.

The scale of sophistication and attractiveness

I stumbled across an outstanding interview with a 29-year-old "professional woman" in Japan, on the subject of Japanese women's yearning for white men. The interviewer cautions that, "her words should not be taken as representative of all Japanese women who study abroad or who date foreign men," but what she says is in fact very representative, in my view.

First, she bluntly depicts the way of the world:

Isn't it fascinating that what this woman said in 1993 almost exactly correlates with what "Andrew Milner" said in 2007 on the Asia Exile blog? Is it paranoid to believe that they might be right?

Take a look at the blue and red horizontal lines on the right side of the diagram. The blue line is the "average" Japanese woman today. The red line is the average Japanese woman tomorrow, after all the sophisticated, attractive, talented Japanese women marry noble, dignified Western gentlemen.

Let's make another observation. The gray box in the bottom-left corner represents what Japanese men are bringing into Japan. The gray box in the upper-right corner represents what noble, dignified Western gentlemen are removing from Japan, and bringing into their home countries. See this blog entry. By and large, it's not a matter of Westerners assimialting into Japanese society, it's Westerners entering Japanese society, taking what they want, and then returning to their own societies. Good blood leaves Japan, bad blood enters Japan. Same phenomenon in South Korea.

On the role that status and power play in Japanese women's akogare:

"But then there's one more thing. The reason that intelligent women have akogare for white men is that they know, well, to be perfectly honest, that Euro-American society is much more mature in terms of human relations that Japan. And they want to get inside that mature society. If you can find a white husband, you can get into that society so easily. They have a desire to climb up in society, to rise up in the world (josho shiko). They have a 'Success Dream' [English]. You know, the 'American Dream!' And of course, as a country, in terms of lifestyle, America has so many things that Japan lacks. Culture ... well, Europe has culture, but America has power. And it's easy to live in. So assuming you want a green card, marriage is the easiest way, right? It's somehow attractive (miryokuteki). So I wonder if that isn't why?"

"But there's another thing. I don't know if American women feel this way or not, but in Japan there is the story of Tamanokoshi - the 'Cinderella story,' right? A rich, handsome, hard-working, upper class man takes you as his wife, and you become Cinderella, you rise up in the world. That's always been a woman's best way to raise her social standing. Maybe now it's a little different, but until not too long ago, that was the only way. Girls were supposed to be cute, quiet and obedient, and good at housekeeping and cooking, that's all. So almost all Japanese women have this hope that someday a prince (ojisama) will come and take you away to live in a castle. And Japan has gradually become wealthy, and so if you get tired of it here, you look for a better place - naturally, Europe or America - the upper classes. Because the upper classes are the most conspicuous."
"I don't know if it would be useful for you, but there's a phenomenon recently in Japan for highly educated, successful career women to marry Japanese men much older than themselves. Fifteen or twenty years older. Like their father. Those women are increasing. It's similar to seeing a foreigner, in that you want to be with someone better than you, someone higher up, more impressive than yourself. Someone who will teach you and protect you, and take care of you. Someone who is strong. Men of the same generation can't keep up with the women who have brought themselves up to a new level. So they go for a much older Japanese or a Westerner. If they don't, the women can't respect or trust them. So definitely, men are lagging behind. Women have progressed."

"And Western women might not have that sense of dependency. But Japanese women want to be kind of enveloped in something big and safe. They want to be protected by a big and strong man. They don't want an equal relationship, or a partnership, but rather to be held and protected by a big man. And in the past, Japanese men were bigger than women, but now men have shrunk. They're small, maybe even smaller than women. So women are dissatisfied."

This touches on another myth perpetuated by whites both here and in Japan: that Japanese women are seeking "modern," "enlightened" men. In truth, most of them are attracted to status and power. They may claim to believe in gender equality, but their behavior doesn't show it. It's the same way for Asian women in general, in the USA. They're looking for father figures and protectors, not equal partners. Any equal partnerships that do exist tend to be between Asian males and Asian females, or Asian males and white females -- not that I condone the latter.

The myth makes it appear that Asian men simply have to change their attitudes, at which point the problem will fade away. For whites to acknowledge that the real cause is the status and power gap would open the question of whether this gap is due to "historical racism and prejudice," as is asserted for other minorities, thereby putting the entire foundation of these relationships on a questionable moral basis.

On the influence of Western media:

Interviewer: My informants tell me that when they imagine that 'prince' he's always white, not Japanese. They say that's from the influence of American movies and TV.

Mitsuko: Right. When I was small, I don't know if this was MacArthur's [Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Occupation of Japan] fault or not, but all the fairy tales and children's books and stories that I read were European and American!

Interviewer: When you were twenty-two or twenty-three, did you have more akogare?

Mitsuko: It was very strong for a period. Your husband [who is Japanese] can probably tell you too, but for a long time, even when I was young, U.S. T.V. shows were shown on Japanese television, like The Lucy Show, Father Knows Best, Bewitched ... and Japanese watched those and were astounded. The reason was, that at that time, a family of five or six people had to live in one or two tiny rooms, and there was no privacy at all, and no luxuries (hanayakasa) like celebrating Christmas with a big cake and gifts, or mom and dad going out for their anniversary. There was love in the Japanese sense, of course, but still those things on television came as an enormous shock to Japanese, and became the object of akogare. I think that is still with us. The idea of a family in the U.S. is to live in a big white house with a great big yard in front, with a spacious entry, and pictures of the family all over, and there's a big cake or pie that Mom just baked, and lots of ice cream, and homemade jelly. And at Christmas the family decorates the tree together...that kind of image of abundance (yutakasa). An image of big, really big love (aijo). So the feeling that you want to be inside that; that you want to be one of those people, that akogare, must be part of the feeling that you want to marry a foreigner.

"When I look at American women, I think they are so lucky that they and their husbands are like lovers, throughout their lives."

Of course, it is false to say that the media is entirely as fault, as it's our own naivete that led us to actually believe these fairy tales. These tales are idealized versions of reality, with precious few real-life examples. It's similar to the way that white liberals portray themselves as "open-minded" and "tolerant" when comparing their cultures to Eastern cultures. There's more to America than the opinions of a few affluent liberals in Los Angeles and New York City, but you'd never know that by reading the newspapers or turning on the television.

The false dichotomy between Asian men and Asian women:

"Well, I can't say which is better, but of course, men will naturally gravitate to the women who are most attractive as women. So, to compete - to be 'rivals' in the good sense, I think everyone has that consciousness. That means Japanese men won't be able to think that just because they're Japanese they can have all the Japanese women to themselves, but rather that if they don't make themselves more attractive, they'll be rejected. And white women will have to make an effort if they don't want to lose all the white men to Japanese women, so everyone will work harder and become more appealing (suteki). Isn't that a good thing?"

It is pointless to make much out of any dichotomy between Asian men and Asian women, as the one cannot exist with the other. If Japanese women reject Japanese men, Japanese women don't exist, and vice versa. Today, in an era where individualism is emphasized beyond all else, this is difficult to grasp. We're encouraged to think solely about our own little lives, not in terms of wider political and social realities. Who invented and propagated that way of thinking? Not us.

Here's a tidbit from another entertaining article, titled Why foreign men like Japan (It's the girls!).

"No! The reason they made so many trips a year was because they were able to consort with large numbers of beautiful young Japanese women in the mizu shobai (me-zoo show-by), or “water business”— the traditional Japanese euphemism for the night-time entertainment trades."

No matter what lines they try to slip past you, the vast majority of them know exactly what they're doing in Japan/Korea/Hong Kong/etc, and it has nothing to do with "business," or "teaching English," or "learning a new culture."
